CARING FOR YOUR DENTURES

Caring For Your Dentures & Partials

  • Dentures/Partials are very delicate and can break if dropped even a few inches onto a hard surface. Be sure to handle them with care!
  • When inserting or removing your dentures/partials, stand over a folded towel or a sink filled with water.
  • When you are not wearing your dentures/partials, store them away from curious children or pets, especially dogs.
  • Daily brushing will help remove food deposits and plaque and help prevent your artificial teeth from becoming permanently stained.
  • A toothbrush made specifically for denture/partial cleaning is best, but a soft-bristled toothbrush can be used.
  • To clean your dentures/partials, rinse off loose particles. Moisten the brush and apply cleanser that is recommended and gently brush every surface of the denture/partial
  • Do not let your dentures/partials dry out or they might lose their shape or become brittle.
  • When you are not wearing them, place dentures or partials in a denture/partial cleanser soaking solution or in plain water. NEVER soak your dentures or partials in bleach it can make them brittle. NEVER soak your dentures or partials in boiling water that can warp them. NEVER apply denture/partial cleansers while dentures/partials are still in the mouth.
  • Look for denture or partial soaking solutions that display the ADA seal of Acceptance, a symbol of safety and effectiveness.
  • At bedtime remember to remove your dentures/partials and soak them over night. It’s always a possibility that grinding or clenching could occur while you are asleep, which is not good for the dentures/partials. It forces a lot of unnecessary pressure on them causing them to crack, break or you could lose teeth or chip them. Even if you have slept with them in the past, you can still start grinding or clenching even though you have never done that. If you sleep with your mouth open, there is a possibility that they could fall out during the night onto the floor where they could break. Part of the reason that we have you remove your denture/partial at bedtime is to let your gums breathe, would you go to bed with your shoes on? Probably not, so please remove them at bedtime.
  • If your dentures or partials break DO NOT super glue them, Loctite, and gorilla glue or use the repair kit that is sold in stores. It can ruin your dentures beyond repair. Also DO NOT try and solder them, hot glue them, boil them or put them in the microwave to attempt to fix them. It can ruin them and/or terminate your warranty that is on them.
